Caring for your senior dog

Most dogs are considered senior from around seven years of age, or earlier for large breeds. With a little extra care, the golden years can be some of the best.

Keeping older dogs healthy and comfortable

As dogs age, their needs change. Many age related conditions develop slowly, and dogs are very good at hiding discomfort, so regular check-ups are the best way to catch problems early.

Common conditions in older dogs

Arthritis and joint stiffness
Dental disease
Kidney and liver disease
Heart disease
Lumps, bumps and cancer
Hormonal conditions such as Cushing’s disease and hypothyroidism
Cognitive changes, similar to dementia in people

How you can help at home

Book a health check every six months, as a lot can change in a year for an older dog
Keep your dog lean. Extra weight puts strain on sore joints
Choose a senior diet suited to their age and health
Keep up gentle, regular exercise such as shorter, more frequent walks
Provide soft, warm bedding and non slip flooring or rugs
Keep their mind active with sniffing games and food puzzles

When to call us

Please book a check-up if you notice changes in drinking, appetite, weight, breathing, toileting or behaviour, or if your dog is slower to get up, reluctant to use stairs or seems confused.
