Dental care at home

Good dental care at home can prevent painful dental disease. Here is how to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.

Why dental care matters

By the age of three, most dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease. Plaque hardens into tartar, gums become inflamed and infected, and teeth can become loose and painful. Bacteria from the mouth can also affect the heart, kidneys and liver.

Brushing is best

Daily tooth brushing is the most effective way to prevent dental disease. Start slowly, using a soft pet toothbrush or finger brush and a pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste, as it can be toxic to pets.

  • Start by letting your pet lick the toothpaste from your finger
  • Gently lift the lip and rub the outer surfaces of the teeth
  • Build up to brushing for about 30 seconds each side
  • Keep it positive with praise and rewards

Other ways to help

  • Prescription dental diets that help clean the teeth as your pet chews
  • Vet approved dental chews and water additives
  • Regular dental checks as part of your pet’s health check

Signs of dental disease

Bad breath, red gums, tartar, drooling, dropping food or pawing at the mouth can all be signs of dental disease. If you notice any of these, please book a dental check.
