Everything you need to know about desexing, from the health benefits to the best age and recovery at home.
Should I desex my pet?
Unless you are planning to breed from your pet, desexing is strongly recommended. It prevents unwanted litters, reduces the risk of several serious diseases and can help with some unwanted behaviours.
Health benefits
- Female dogs and cats: prevents pyometra (a life threatening uterine infection) and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer when done early
- Male dogs and cats: prevents testicular cancer and reduces prostate problems
- Reduces roaming, fighting and the injuries that come with it
What age is best?
Kittens are usually desexed from around 12 to 16 weeks of age. For dogs, the ideal time depends on breed and size. Small breeds are often desexed around six months, while some large and giant breeds benefit from waiting until they are more mature. Our vets will give you advice based on your pet.
Caring for your pet after surgery
- Keep your pet quiet and restrict running and jumping for 10 to 14 days
- Use the cone or recovery suit to stop licking of the wound
- Check the wound daily for redness, swelling or discharge
- Keep the wound dry, so no baths or swimming until the stitches are checked
- Give pain relief as directed
